Interview by Farzin Farzad, AP Peace Fellow - June 29, 2009
Interview with the Founder and President of the Association for the Defence of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners in Iran (ADAPP): Zamani discusses the ongoing electoral crisis and explores why Azerbaijan’s provinces in Iran have remained relatively quiet compared to Tehran.
The Association for the Defence of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners (ADAPP) focuses on advocating for the human rights of Iran’s minorities, particularly the Azerbaijani Turkish community. Azerbaijani Iranians, who are primarily Shia Muslims, are recognized as Iran's largest minority, making up about 25-30% of the population. This community is mainly concentrated in the north and northwest of the country, although sizable groups can be found throughout Iran. In recent years, Azerbaijani activists have been demanding greater cultural and linguistic rights, such as the right to receive education in Azerbaijani-Turkish and the freedom to celebrate their cultural heritage. However, these demands have been met with severe repression by Iranian authorities, resulting in executions, torture, persecution, and the imprisonment of Azerbaijani human rights defenders.
