East Azerbaijan ranks first among Iranian provinces in terms of emigration levels to central regions of Iran. The governor of East Azerbaijan provided this information to the press.
"The bitter truth is that East Azerbaijan is the province that sends the most immigrants in the country," Governor Mohammadreza Purmohammadi said in a statement to the media.
According to the semi-official "Fars" news agency, Purmohammadi explained that "the high emigration rate is due to household difficulties and the lack of job opportunities."
Other provinces in Iranian Azerbaijan also have some of the highest emigration rates. Ardabil province has also ranked at the top of the list of "provinces that send the most immigrants" during different periods in the past.
Earlier, economist Mehdi Neimi, in an interview with Voice of America, described the level of emigration from Iranian Azerbaijan to other regions of the country as "abnormal" and "concerning."
According to Neimi, "The population of some cities in Iranian Azerbaijan has been almost doubled by immigration to cities like Tehran."
