Eighteen female scholars and activists from Iranian Azerbaijan, as well as countries such as Turkey, the U.S., and Germany, have issued a joint statement condemning war and calling for peace through the implementation of UN resolutions and an end to occupation.

The statement, signed under the name “A Group of Intersectional Feminists”, criticized an open letter titled “A Call for Lasting Peace in Nagorno-Karabakh”, which was published ten days earlier by well-known scholars and writers such as Noam Chomsky, Cornel West, Amitav Ghosh, and Gayatri Spivak.

The “Call for Peace” letter alleged that Azerbaijan had targeted civilians and conducted ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In their statement, the feminists from southern Azerbaijan criticized the “reductionist perspective” of the “Call for Peace” letter.

“The reductionist view of the letter, as well as its underlying alarmist and Turkophobic sentiments, raise serious concerns about the very framework of academia, which we hope would contribute to making the world a better place… The fact that this letter ignores UN resolutions 822, 853, 874, and 884 on Karabakh, while also failing to mention the bombing of civilian areas in Azerbaijan’s Ganja city—where dozens of civilians, including women and children, were killed—is a clear sign of a silenced humanitarian conscience,” the feminists’ statement read.

The statement further declared:

“We express our opposition and deep regret regarding the aforementioned letter and reaffirm our stance against all forms of occupation, violence, militarism, and internal despotism. Furthermore, we emphasize the necessity of a democratic system that guarantees the rights of all minority groups in Azerbaijan based on human rights principles. We condemn war and demand that the Armenian government implement the relevant UN resolutions and put an end to the occupation to ensure lasting peace.”

The statement was signed by the following feminists from Iranian Azerbaijan:

Azam Ahmadi, Elnaz Sardarinia, Faizeh Bahadori, Faranak Farid, Fatemeh Nasirpour, Fatemeh Dehghan, Giti Edalati, Hajar Kabiri, Mehdiyeh Ahani, Maryam Quluzadeh, Mina Ajalli, Rahimeh Mohammadi-Fard, Rubabe Taghizadeh-Zonuz, Ruqayya Kabiri, Sabur Kabiri, Sevda Alimadadnejad, Sevil Suleymani, and Sudabe Taghizadeh-Zonuz.
