According to a recently released report, the number of early marriages in Iran has increased in the past year compared to previous years. Some observers attribute the main reason for this to the worsening economic situation in Iran in recent years. At the same time, observers note that these statistics are higher among the minorities living in Iran. In an interview with Voice of America, Sevil Suleymani, a researcher on women and gender issues and a sociology PhD candidate at George Mason University, discussed the role of awareness-raising in preventing early marriages in Iranian Azerbaijan, as well as the importance of expanding education and economic opportunities for girls and women.
