According to Allahverdi Dehghani, the Member of Parliament for Varzegan in East Azerbaijan Province, the National Iranian Copper Industries Company provides incorrect statistics about the amount of copper that can be extracted from the Sungun mine in Iranian Azerbaijan.
The Sungun copper mine, located in Varzegan, East Azerbaijan, is considered one of Iran's most important mines.
Dehghani states that "in order to hinder investment in the development of this region and to send copper to Kerman province, incorrect statistics are being provided about the amount of copper that can be extracted from Sungun."
According to the MP, "thanks to this mine, a large amount of capital flows out of East Azerbaijan to provinces like Kerman every year. However, no investment is made in this region for its own development and to increase employment. As a result, the path to growth and development for our region is being closed."
He expressed that this situation is sad and tragic for East Azerbaijan Province.
In recent months, the revenue from gold, copper, and other precious stone mines in Iranian Azerbaijan has been one of the most discussed topics. Political activists, as well as some MPs and local politicians, emphasize that the local population does not benefit from the revenue of these mines.
