In a copy of the identity card shared by the child's family on social media, it is noted that Tura was born in May 2022. The date of issuance of the identity card is recorded as March 1, 2023.
No details have been shared regarding which institutions the family contacted during the past 10 months. The child's father, Abdussalam Pashayi Quluncu, expressed on his Instagram page that the only way to obtain an identity card with a Turkish name is through "resistance."
"My son Tura received his ID card after 10 months. They show us long, exhausting, and complicated court procedures to give our children Turkish names," Pashayi Quluncu wrote.
In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of families in various provinces of Iran, where Turks live, choosing Turkish names for their children. Families especially prefer to give their children names that are popular in Turkey. In various cities, civil registration offices often refuse to issue identity cards, arguing that the names chosen by families are not of Iranian or Islamic origin, are foreign, or are not on the approved list.
In Iranian Azerbaijan and Tehran, families who have been unable to obtain identity cards for their children with Turkish names for months or even years have been trying to make their voices heard through social media.
Previously, information had circulated on social media that Iranian officials had refused to issue identity cards for names such as Alp Orhan, Sevgi, Tarkan, Yağış, Oğuz Kaan, Onur, Alparslan, Atakan, Ayıl, Anar, Türkay, and Volkan. Some of these names were eventually registered after families made repeated appeals to the registration offices or courts.
