The Registration Department in Tabriz has issued an ID card for a girl named Elana from the Allahverdipur family, after initially refusing to do so, following a court decision.

The Allahverdipur family from Tabriz had to approach the court to obtain an ID card for their child, who was born about four months ago, with a Turkish name. In March, the court upheld the family's complaint.

Az News TV and a Telegram channel called Abbas Lisani reported this news.

"Hamid Allahverdipur shared a copy of his child's ID card on his Instagram page and wrote that the fight and resistance against fascism and apartheid paid off, and Elana was finally issued an ID card," Az News TV reported.

In December, the Allahverdipur family applied to the Tabriz branch of Iran's Civil Registration Office and the East Azerbaijan main office to obtain an ID card for their daughter. However, the registration office had previously refused to register the name 'Elana', citing that it was "inappropriate and forbidden" and "unsuitable for a female name."

Hamid Allahverdipur, the child's father, appealed to Tabriz's General Court in January, requesting that the ID card be issued with the name they had chosen for their daughter and that the court fees be paid by the registration office.

The court ruled in favor of issuing the ID card with the name Elana and also ordered that the court fees be paid by the Tabriz Registration Department and the provincial main office. However, following an appeal by the registration office to the East Azerbaijan Provincial Appeals Court, the decision to issue the ID card was upheld, but the complaint regarding the payment of court fees was accepted. This meant that the Allahverdipur family had to cover the court fees themselves.

Iran's civil registration offices often refuse to issue ID cards for Turkish names chosen by families, arguing that the names are not of Iranian or Islamic origin, are foreign, or are not on the approved list.
