Iran Identity Card

The Civil Registration Office in Ardabil has agreed to issue an identity card for the Turkish name "Dolunay." This was reported by Abbas Lisani’s Telegram channel, referencing Said Sadigifar's Instagram page.

Said Sadigifar, the father of Dolunay, stated on his Instagram page that the Ardabil Civil Registration Office decided on December 14 to finally issue an identity card for their child. The issuance of the identity card with the name Dolunay was completed within 16 days.

Said Sadigifar, a resident of Ardabil, is a civil activist who had previously been arrested and subjected to various pressures by security forces due to his peaceful activities.

Said Sadigifar and his wife sent a formal request to the registration office, insisting that their child’s identity card should list the name "Dolunay." Their persistence led to the positive decision by the registration office.

In recent years, Azerbaijani families in various provinces of Iran have shown an increased interest in giving Turkish names to their children. This trend of giving Turkish names to children is particularly noticeable in cities with significant Turkish populations.

Statements from some officials indicate that Turkish names are increasingly appearing on the list of popular names for babies. This growth in name selection may be linked to families placing more value on their cultural heritage and a desire to preserve their Turkish identity. However, due to the policies of Iran's Civil Registration Office, families who choose Turkish names for their children often face months or even years of delays in obtaining identity cards.

This case highlights the difficulties faced by some parents in Iran when choosing Turkish names for their children.

Some observers view the persistence of families in seeking identity cards for their children with Turkish names as part of a cultural resistance campaign for the rights of national minorities, particularly Azerbaijani Turks, in the country.
