Tabriz Registration Office |
In an interview with local media outlet Tabriz-e-Bidar, the head of the Registration Office of East Azerbaijan Province, Reza Imani, revealed the list of the most popular names in the province. What stands out in the list is the inclusion of Turkish names.
According to Imani, in the past 9 months, the most popular names chosen by families for girls included Zahra, Nafas, Fatima, Mahlin, Aylin, Nura, Deniz, Selin, Anya, and Helma.
For boys, families in East Azerbaijan Province most commonly chose names like Ayhan, Ali, Amir Ali, Abulfazl, Alisan, Araz, Muhammad, Elvin, Orhan, and Mehdi.
Turkish names like Aylin, Selin, Deniz, Ayhan, and Orhan are listed among the most popular names chosen by families in East Azerbaijan.
It appears that despite many obstacles for families in Iran who choose Turkish names for their children, Turkish names remain popular in provinces with a dense Turkish population. There are frequent reports that the Registration Office disagrees with the Turkish names chosen by families, and as a result, these children are deprived of ID cards for months or even years. In some cases, children are not able to obtain an ID card until they reach school age.
Earlier, officials from the Ardabil and Zanjan provinces also revealed that Turkish names were among the most popular names in those provinces. In Zanjan, Ayhan was one of the most commonly chosen names by families for their children. The list of popular names in Ardabil province is quite similar to that of East Azerbaijan.
