Islamic Republic of Iran Identity Card

The Safari family from Tabriz has been unable to obtain ID cards for their triplets, born about four months ago, with the chosen names Elshan, Elnur, and Sevgi.

According to sources such as Southern Azerbaijan Television (Günaz TV) and Araz News, the registration office refuses to issue ID cards despite a court ruling in the family's favor.

The sources state that the Tabriz registration department refuses to register the names because they do not conform to the Persian language's spelling rules.

These names have previously been registered in various cities across Iranian Azerbaijan as a result of legal battles fought by other families. However, the Tabriz registration office has stated that a directive came from Tehran not to register names that do not follow the Persian orthographic rules.

There have been cases in Iranian Azerbaijan and Tehran where families have been unable to obtain ID cards for their children with the Turkish names they chose, in some cases for months or even years. Due to the lack of ID cards, these families have been unable to access public health services and other state services, and are forced to pay high fees for services in the private sector.

Previously, social media reported that Iranian officials refused to issue ID cards for names such as Alp Orhan, Sevgi, Yağış, Oğuz Kaan, Onur, Alparslan, Atakan, Ayıl, Hakan, Anar, Emre, Çağrı, Türkay, Tarkan, and Volkan. Some of these names were later registered after families repeatedly appealed to registration offices or courts.

In various cities, civil registration offices often refuse to issue ID cards, claiming that the names chosen by families are not of Iranian or Islamic origin, are foreign, or are not on the approved list.
