An Open Letter from 600 Azerbaijani Students to the Media: Bring Our Mother Tongue into Your Newspapers

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, 600 students and graduates of journalism have penned an open letter to the privately-owned domestic media, criticizing the lack of responsible action from authorities in addressing this issue. They have called for a portion of content in these publications to be presented in Azerbaijani Turkish.

In the letter, the Azerbaijani students, while explaining the importance of the mother tongue and the deprivation faced by Azerbaijanis in learning their language, expressed their willingness to contribute to producing content for Turkish pages in newspapers and magazines.

The full text of the letter is as follows:

Letter from a Group of Azerbaijani Students and Graduates to the Editors-in-Chief and Responsible Managers of Shargh, Etemad, Bahar, and Arman Newspapers, and Nasim-e Bidari, Aseman, Mehrnameh, and Andisheh Pouya Magazines

Dear Esteemed Scholars, Editors-in-Chief, and Responsible Managers of Shargh, Etemad, Bahar, and Arman Newspapers, and Nasim-e Bidari, Aseman, Mehrnameh, and Andisheh Pouya Magazines,

Greetings and respect,

Fourteen years ago, UNESCO declared February 21, corresponding to the 2nd of Esfand, as International Mother Language Day, dedicating a special day to honor one of the most vital blessings of God: the mother tongues of individuals and nations.

As you journalists are well aware, our country is home to a significant portion of the galaxy of languages, with thousands of people in this land thinking and speaking in diverse languages. You know well that each of these languages holds within it a sea of historical and cultural treasures.

We do not need to inform you about the deprivation faced by the speakers of these languages and the bearers of this human treasure. While the teaching, learning, and use of each of these languages could have opened a wide window into enriching our culture, we have contented ourselves with learning and writing in only one language, neglecting, and at times even disregarding, the teaching and preservation of these other valuable linguistic and cultural heritages.

You, the media professionals, know well that the media and press are the voices of the people and their readers, and speaking in the language of the people is a prerequisite for people-centric governance and democracy. It is fitting for those who have devoted their lives to enlightening people and documenting their struggles and hardships to reflect on this reality: deprivation of the mother tongue is a persistent and pervasive suffering that flows through every page of human life. Many other psychological, educational, social, and economic challenges may have their roots in this deprivation.

One of the deprived languages in the country is Azerbaijani Turkish, a language in which millions of people (your readers) think and speak, and thousands, despite all the limitations and obstacles, write and compose poetry.

In light of the indifference of the authorities and the lack of cultural and political will to address this deprivation, we appeal to you, as some of the most active and effective members of civil society: bring the mother tongue of your Turkish-speaking compatriots, the second language of the Islamic world, into the pages of your newspapers. Dedicate at least one page of your newspapers or a section of your media to the language of millions of your fellow citizens.

For you, as paragons of culture and thought, the importance of languages and cultures, and the need to respect the cultural and linguistic rights of all identity groups without any form of discrimination, is not a novel idea. You are well aware of the illustrious historical background and the special place of Azerbaijani culture and literature in this country. You also know how this great treasure is valued even more highly beyond this country’s borders in universities and reputable scientific institutions worldwide.

This declaration can serve as a symbol for the beginning of a return—a return to justice and the core values of humanity. By publishing this declaration, you can undoubtedly distance yourselves from the indifference and injustices of past decades.

Additionally, consider this letter as an expression of readiness by hundreds of Azerbaijani Turkish-speaking writers to contribute content for Turkish-language sections in your newspapers, adhering to journalistic standards. According to many prominent experts in political science and sociology, addressing this issue (teaching and writing in the mother tongue) will strengthen and sustain national security and benefit all people.

In conclusion, we end our letter with the wise words of Dr. Kazem Motamednejad, a distinguished professor of journalism, a thoughtful advocate for press rights, and the father of modern journalism in the country, regarding the necessity of publishing periodicals in non-Persian languages. May the invaluable advice of such luminaries serve as guidance. On November 2, 2011, in an interview with Shargh newspaper, Dr. Motamednejad stated:

“I support the publication of non-Persian-language periodicals and believe it to be a necessity. We must answer history on this matter. Publishing periodicals in non-Persian languages is a recognized right in press law and an ethical principle of professional journalism.”
