“Our society does not want a woman to sing and be called a singer. This perspective needs to change. Men need to change their views towards women,” said southern vocalist Sanaz Niknam in an interview with Voice of America. The southern vocalist considers the negative views towards women’s musical activities, in addition to the official bans imposed by the theocratic regime in Iranian Azerbaijan, to be one of the main obstacles to the development of music.

According to Iranian law, the activity of female singers is prohibited. Therefore, Sanaz Niknam, who took her first music lessons in Tabriz from masters like Farideh Asgarniya, stated that she emigrated to the Republic of Azerbaijan when she seriously wanted to continue her music career.

The singer, who studied at a vocal music school in Baku, explained that in the South, female singers face not only the government but also difficulties and restrictions from society.

Sanaz Niknam also shared her personal experience of encountering negative attitudes from the people of Tabriz, including her relatives. In her opinion, due to these reasons, female musicians in the South have no professional future.

Currently living in exile in the United Kingdom, the southern vocalist also discussed the concerts she has held in the UK and other European countries, as well as the joint music programs she has participated in.

Sanaz Niknam also noted that Azerbaijani cultural associations in European countries do not support southern musicians, which has concerned her.
