The international street theater festival Tabrizim began on August 13 at Musafir Park in Tabriz. In addition to groups from Iranian Azerbaijan, theater troupes from Tehran, Marivan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iraqi Kurdistan are also participating in the festival.
According to the festival schedule published by the Tabriz Municipality, not only will groups from Turkey and Azerbaijan perform, but most of the plays staged by groups from Iranian Azerbaijan will also be in the Turkish language.
The IRNA news agency reported that four performances from Turkey, two from Azerbaijan, and one from Iraqi Kurdistan will be presented at the Tabrizim festival.
From Turkey, director Orhan Kaya will stage the famous shadow play Hacivat and Karagöz, as well as Ashiq and Mashuq. Director Murat Yerlikaya will participate with the play The Man on the Bridge.
From Azerbaijan, directors Ceyhun Dadashov and Imam Hasanov have traveled to Tabriz with their respective plays, Tesseract and The Garden of Dreams. The Garden of Dreams was written by Parviz Basherdust, who is originally from Iranian Azerbaijan.
A theater group from Marivan in Iran’s Kurdistan province and another from Iraqi Kurdistan are also taking part in the Tabrizim festival.
Local productions competing in the festival include Don’t Go, Uncle, Come to the Tree (Director: Siyamak Afsayi), Bomb (Mehdi Mostafavi), The Story of Bachelorhood (Ehsan Behtasi), Gold (Babak Meynagi), and The Desert (Jamal Saqinejad).
A special section of the Tabrizim festival is dedicated to "statue performances" unique to the city of Tabriz. The festival will conclude on August 16.
