Urmia University Student Magazine Shut Down for Using the Latin Alphabet

Deniz Magazine

The "Deniz" magazine, published in Turkish and Persian, was shut down permanently by the Urmia University Publications Oversight Committee, which had previously imposed a 6-month ban on its publication.

According to a letter sent by the Oversight Committee to the magazine's director, Yasir Ranjbari, the decision to shut down the magazine permanently was based on "raising ethnic issues, causing harm to national unity, and the use of the Latin alphabet in issue 14."

According to information obtained by Voice of America, university officials had previously warned the magazine's staff about publishing a picture of Atatürk on the cover of the magazine, as well as writings about Seyid Jafar Pishaveri.

Southern activists have emphasized that student magazines in the Turkish language in universities have played a significant role in raising national consciousness among young people over the past 20 years.
