Racism Against Turks in Iranian Football

Voice of America, July 3, 2017

The Fare network (formerly Football Against Racism in Europe) is a network set up to counter discrimination in European football.

The FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) network, operating under the auspices of the European Football Associations (UEFA) and the International Football Federations (FIFA), recently published a guide document on instances of racial discrimination in football stadiums worldwide.

The document, which includes examples of discrimination against ethnic and religious groups, as well as women and sexual minorities in football, draws attention to the racist chants directed at Turks by Iranian fans in the Iran section.

The chants by Iranian football fans against Turkish supporters are explained under the heading “khar” (donkey) in the document.

FARE also refers to chants such as "Turkish donkey," "Donkey, get lost!" "There is no braying from the donkeys!" and "The Turkish donkeys are silent!"

These chants are typically heard during matches of Tabriz’s Traktorsazi (Tractor) team when they play outside Iran's Azerbaijani region, and are often voiced by fans of rival teams.

The document has recently gained widespread attention on social media platforms and among Turkish activists in Iranian Azerbaijan.
