Roghaiye Kabiri

Iranian Azerbaijani writer and member of the Iranian Writers' Association, Roghaiye Kabiri, was summoned by the security forces to the Intelligence Department in Tabriz. After being interrogated for several hours, she was released.

The summons of the writer, originally from the city of Khoy and living in Tabriz, is related to a protest held by a group of women in front of the East Azerbaijan Governor's Office.

"Yesterday, during the protest about Lake Urmia, someone told us that all of our identities were determined through face recognition systems. The result of this became clear today when they called me to the Intelligence Department," Roghaiye Kabiri wrote on her Instagram page.

After being interrogated for several hours at the Tabriz Intelligence Department, Kabiri shared further information on her Instagram page.

According to the information she provided on her social media, the interrogators asked her to sign a pledge stating that she would not participate in any protests. However, Kabiri defended her right, as a citizen, to peacefully demand from the governor's office, stating that this was not related to creating disturbances.

On August 14, women in Tabriz staged a protest in front of the East Azerbaijan Governor's Office, demanding the revival of Lake Urmia. Earlier, on August 12, Azerbaijani women had gathered in front of the Department of Natural Resources and Water Basins in Tabriz for another protest.

Roghaiye Kabiri, a poet and short story writer from Khoy, located in Iran's West Azerbaijan province, writes much of her work in Azerbaijani Turkish. Several of her works, including "My Heart Hurts" and "My Home," have been published in Baku.
