National Identity Card of the Islamic Republic of Iran |
In the Azerbaijan region of Iran, the most popular names among the population are "Fatma" (Fatimah) for girls and "Ayhan" for boys in Zanjan province.
This information was shared by the official state agency IRNA, citing the Zanjan branch of Iran's Civil Registration Office.
According to Mehdi Jalachiyan, head of the Civil Registration Office in Zanjan, “The statistical data indicates that Ayhan and Fatma are the most popular names chosen for boys and girls in our province."
Jaläçiyan added, "In the past 5 months, the most common name given to newborn boys in the province has been Ayhan, followed by Amir Abbas, Amir Ali, Hussein, and Amir Hussein."
According to IRNA, in the first 5 months of the 1402nd Hijri year, 5,701 babies were born in Zanjan province.
In recent years, there has been an increasing trend of families in various provinces of Iran, where Turks live, choosing Turkish names for their children. Families especially prefer names that are popular in Turkey.
In both Iranian Azerbaijan and Tehran, there have been reports of families unable to obtain national identity cards for their children due to the Turkish names they choose. These families have been trying to voice their concerns through social media. Previously, social media reported that Iranian officials had refused to issue identity cards for names such as Alp Orhan, Sevgi, Yağış, Oğuz Kaan, Onur, Alparslan, Atakan, Ayıl, Hakan, Anar, Türkay, Tarkan, and Volkan. Some of these names were later registered after families repeatedly appealed to registration offices or courts.
In various cities, the Civil Registration Offices often refuse to issue identity cards, claiming that the names chosen by families are typically not of Iranian or Islamic origin, are foreign, or are not on the official list.
