Iran National Identity Card |
Azerbaijani Turk civil activist Murtaza Nurmahammadi has announced that, after nearly a year and one month, he could finally obtain a national identity card for his child, Hunay. The Iranian Registration Office had previously opposed issuing an identity card under the name Hunay.
Murtaza Nurməhəmmədi shared on his Instagram page last September that his electronic application for his child's name had been registered, but the office had opposed the name and sent him a message. He had applied to the Sufiyan Registration Office to obtain an identity card for his baby, but the application was unsuccessful.
Ten days later, security forces contacted Nurmahammadi through the office's phone and called him in for a meeting to resolve the issue. However, when he went to the office, he was arrested and taken to the Tabriz Intelligence Department's detention center.
After being held at the Tabriz Intelligence Department for 20 days, he was transferred to the Tabriz Central Prison on September 29. He was temporarily released on November 28 after posting a 500 million Toman bail, pending the conclusion of the court proceedings.
Based on the image of Hunay's identity card shared on social media, his date of birth is listed as August 21, 2023. This means that Hunay was without an identity card for a year and one month after birth. During this period, the child could not benefit from social services or insurance due to the lack of an identity card.
The restrictions imposed by the Iranian Registration Office on giving Turkish names to children of Turkish families create serious cultural and legal barriers for these families, directly affecting their right to preserve and pass on their national identity to future generations.
